Dear Recep Tayyip Erdoğan (President of Republic of Turkey) and Bekir Bozdağ (Justice Minister),
In the early 2000s, Turkey was seen a model Muslim and democratic country at meeting point of European and Asian civilizations. The ruling AKP’s discourse and policies in the firsts years of its government as to improving the democracy and making the rule of law prevail as well as seeking to be a part of the European Union were welcomed by advocates of democracy everywhere.
Since 2012, the political power has started to move away from democracy, justice, the rule of law and human rights. Abandoning its priority of improving democracy, it has begun to be associated with police operations against opposition groups, extrajudicial killings, unfair trials, torture and kidnappings.
In the last 6 years, approximately 2 million Turkish citizens have been charged with terrorism offences and 512,000 of them have been prosecuted. 320,000 people have been convicted and 131,000 people have been imprisoned. There are more than 30,000 Turkish citizens, including the sick, the elderly, the disabled and children, a who are currently imprisoned for terrorism offences with tens of thousands of others facing the same fate.
