Vande Lanotte challenges Turkish regime before the International Criminal Court

Systematic abductions (enforced disappearances), torture and arbitrary arrests… With these charges, former (Belgian) minister Johan Vande Lanotte goes to the International Criminal Court against the regime of Turkish President Erdogan. Whether Erdogan will also be personally indicted has not yet been determined, according to the Mediahuis newspapers.

The International Criminal Court in The Hague was established twenty years ago to try suspects of war crimes and crimes against humanity. According to Vande Lanotte, President Recep Erdogan’s Turkey fits perfectly into that definition. “There is hardly a democracy. In terms of human rights, it is simply an authoritarian regime. Moreover, Turkey misuses allegations of terrorism or espionage to kidnap and torture dissidents.”

When Vande Lanotte left politics two years ago, he started a new career at the office of the Ghent lawyer Walter Van Steenbrugge. The law firm has collected nearly 800 testimonies of torture, 60 abductions and 2,000 cases of arbitrary detention.
